In this series, we will discuss some “Don’ts” for an optimal seed germination.
Here are our top 8 tips.
- After sowing seeds, do not keep soil moisture wet. Do this by allowing drainage holes to exit excess water to prevent molding, death, and rotting of seed
- Fertilizer is not a necessity for germination, but it is necessary to provide it in anticipation of seedlings growth after germination, but do it in moderation.
- Avoid over watering your seeds during nursery stage especially if your soil or media is dense and container lacks drainage. Excessive moisture in the soil or other media can displace air in the pore spaces and can reduce its availability to the seed, reducing your germination success.
- Do not heavily cover your seeds with soil during seedling as it can make it difficult for the seeds to push out during germination. A depth/ soil cover of 1 cm is enough for small seeds.
- Do not reuse old potting mix for nursing new seeds. To reduce potential spread of disease.
- Do not use garden soil (loamy/black soil) to nurse your seeds. It can be dense and have pathogens that can affect seed/seedling development.
- Do not use a heating pad if you are in a tropical region. It is very unnecessary.
- Do not water seeds/seedlings with warm water if you are in a tropical zone.
